Cryptojacking Adverts Found to Be Mining Monero On Youtube

It has been revealed that new cryptojacking adverts have been discovered on YouTube. Describing the activity of your computer power being used to mine digital currency without approval, cryptojacking can occur if you visit untrustworthy websites, and can appear as popup adverts.

A new form of such adverts has been uncovered on YouTube and is said to appear in the top right-hand corner. It has been alleged that they were created to use over 80% of the computer\'s power to mine Monero.

According to reports, the cryptojacking adverts began on 18th January, and were exposed by adblockers. Troy Mursch, a security researcher, has since explained that YouTube was probably singled out, as users tend to spend a long time on the website. The longer someone is browsing a website, the longer cryptojackers and miners can affect their hardware. Over 90% of the adverts were found to be using a CoinHive script which is a publicly available cryptojacking supplier of codes. In addition to this, some adverts also contained malicious software, urging users to click and copy malware to their workstations.

Google has responded to the recent news confirming that cryptojacking adverts breach their policies, and they have since taken action to combat such activity.
