Bulgaria Joins a Long List of Countries Investigating Cryptocurrencies

Bulgaria is the latest country to investigate the use of cryptocurrencies, after it was revealed that the Bulgarian Special Prosecutor's Office is part of enquiry into the companies and people behind OneCoin, the digital currency investment scheme.

Having been accused of organising a pyramid scheme, OneCoin are being examined by officials in Germany, Bulgaria and those from international groups such as Eurojust and Europol. This latest news comes after Germany has been carrying out investigations into the digital currency since last year, after it stopped promoters and the use of OneCoin in the country.

In a statement released by the Bulgarian prosecutor's office, it was revealed that corporate offices relating to OneCoin had been raided, and dozens of people have been interviewed. The statement also indicated that a number of other countries had also launched their own investigation, highlighting the international nature of the inspection.

Ruja Ignatova, OneCoin's founder, was said to have been previously charged in July by Indian authorities regarding the alleged pyramid scheme. What's more, Bulgaria's prosecutor's office confirmed that companies connected to OneCoin Ltd are being questioned in Ireland, England, Canada, the United States, Italy, Estonia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, and many other countries.
