World Food Programme Embraces Blockchain

The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it plans to expand the use of blockchain technology in order to make international payments. Officials believe that the organisation will be able to use blockchain to reduce the bank fees it currently pays.

\r\n

The WFP is a United Nations body which feeds an estimated 100 million people located in over 80 nations across the globe. In 2017, the organisation transferred $1.4 billion. Due to the large amounts of money that it moves around the world, the WFP pays bank transfer fees worth millions of dollars. The EFP plans to use a distributed ledger which uses the Ethereum network.

The WFP has already carried out some limited testing, using blockchain technology to move money from the USA to Jordan. The test saved the WFP around $150,000 per month and reduced bank fees by 98%.

As well as providing food to those in need, the WFP also aims to prevent future problems by increasing food security around the globe. It\'s the latest government agency to express an interest in blockchain technology; it is believed that NATO and the Pentagon are also considering how blockchain technology could be used to make transactions more secure.
