The anonymous Reddit user, known only by the username PineappleFund, has made another $1m bequest (91.45 BTC), this time to the Free Software Foundation.
\r\nThe Fund was first established in December, when Bitcoin was put on the books of Chicago\'s futures markets, and its price went through the roof. The anonymous benefactor, now going by the name \'Pine,\' clearly cleaned up, but instead of cashing in for capitalist benefits, Pine has turned cryptocurrency into philanthropy. An early Bitcoin adopter, who is believed to be one of the 25 biggest holders of the currency, Pine saw December\'s sudden windfall as an ideal opportunity to do some good in the world.
\r\nThe Pineapple Fund now has organisation status, as a crypto-only donor, and its stated aim is to give away $86m-worth of Bitcoin (5,057 BTC). So far it has committed over a third of that amount, donating $34.4m worth of BTC to 41 varied organisations. $1m went to a clean water project for sub-Saharan Africa, and another $1m to a digital rights watchdog, Electronic Frontier Foundation.
\r\nThe Free Software Foundation is an organisation dedicated to providing open-source and free computing software to all humanity, supporting net neutrality, and operating the internet on libertarian principles, with the goal of having a genuine GNU (GNU-Not Unix) operating system.
