Speaking at Schneider Electric\'s Innovation Summit this week in Sydney, Australia, Dr Josh Byrne presented his Density by Design concept, which is aimed at building future communities with a Net Zero Energy usage. The development company, LandCorp, has built a demonstration community in Fremantle, Western Australia, in order to illustrate the way power can be generated in the future. With these innovative housing designs, electricity can also be used, shared or stored.
\r\nByrne was speaking to an audience of technological innovators, including blockchain experts Power Ledger, whose MD David Martin gave a keynote speech on how blockchain is revolutionising the energy industry. Power Ledger uses the peer-to-peer decentralised ledger to redistribute unused energy amongst users. It\'s one of the technologies that could be incorporated into LandCorp\'s WGV (White Gum Valley) project. The intent of WGV is to be a zero net energy community, which could support itself on a micro-grid basis.
\r\nWGV incorporates also the Gen Y Housing Project, which demonstrates a workable micro-grid system. Collecting solar energy, all residences can use it, store it or trade it with others, and it can also be implemented in apartment buildings. New technology such as blockchain can help with transparent distribution, billing and metering systems, so that the question of who owns the roof space is not relevant. The system could revolutionise Western Australia\'s energy usage over the next 20 years.
