According to local media, Brisbane Airport (BNE) is to become the first airport in the world to allow travellers to make cryptocurrency transactions within terminals. BNE is working with international and local businesses to enable their passengers to make crypto purchases when buying from the airport's retailers, including coffee shops, restaurants, and clothing shops.

The hope is to allow customers to use the popular cryptocurrency coins, bitcoin, ether, and dash. This represents a world first, which many speculate will lead to greater adoption for cryptocurrency payment platforms by airports and shopping centres across the globe.

As the volume of people investing in such currencies increases, it makes sense for BNE to turn its attentions to initiatives that facilitate coin usage. According to the General Manager of Strategic Planning and Development at BNE, Roel Hellemons, the rapid adoption of cryptocurrencies by the mainstream means that an increasing number of international travellers are searching for cryptocurrency payment options.

BNE will seek to collaborate with digital currency payment platform, TravelbyBit, who will provide the airport with crypto payment solutions and enable travellers to spend their digital money within the airport.

The move will help travellers save money as it cuts out the middlemen, such as credit card providers, who charge up to 3% in processing fees. It also negates the need to pay exchange rates, as digital currencies operate globally.
