The United Nations Children's Fund has launched a new appeal in which gamers can mine Ether to support its work in Syria.
Entitled Game Changers, UNICEF's latest project has currently raised nearly €1,000. UNICEF's official website states that over 13 million people in Syria need life-saving assistance and 6-million of these are young children. The new project aims to raise money for these people in a unique way. One of the concepts is that people who may not typically donate can now give money using cryptocurrencies.
The project's website explains that digital currency went from being an idea in the 90's to something which is highly relevant in today's world. Numerous cryptocurrencies exist, and some are mined using power from computer's graphics cards. Game Changers is now exchanging graphics cards for humanitarian tools to create the world's first Blockchain fundraising project.
Appealing to a community of gamers, UNICEF advises those who wish to take part to install mining software on their computers, as this will allow them to mine Ethereum which will then be transferred to UNICEF's digital wallet. Without lifting a finger, users can generate money for the charity. The official website details different ways in which people can donate using fiat currency if they don't want to start mining cryptocurrencies.
